Machines . . . An Exciting Primary Activity

 

A fun introduction to building simple mechanical toys!

 Staffordshire STEM Activity - Machines

This activity is designed to give children an opportunity to learn the basics of a variety of geared mechanisms through a logical sequence of steps supported by investigative questioning. Children will learn how gears are used in everyday life. They will be involved in relevant vocabulary and understand how gears can change the direction and speed of something.

 

Key Stage Focus: KS1, KS2 

 

Main Curriculum links:
  • D&T: Moving, Mechanisms and excellent precursor to pulleys and gears. For example the Fairgrounds and the Controllable Vehicle projects suggested by the QCA.
  • Literacy: Speaking and Listening, following instructionStaffordshire STEM Activity - Machines
  • PHSE: Teamwork.
  • Maths: Number and Proportions
Organisation:
  • The activity takes approximately 2½ hours
  • Worktables or classroom is required. 
  • Ideal group sizes of about 30 pupils so two classes could be incorporated in a single day.

Cost: Full day £375  Half day £200
