Solar Sailing . . . An Exiting Primary Activity

 

A fantastic opportunity to learn about ‘Green’ energy. Children construct catamaran platforms adding a sail and solar motor to power a small propeller. The solar energy is converted to electrical energy then stored in a capacitor working as a battery.

Main Curriculum links:   
  • Science: Forces, electricity, alternative energy, recycling and sustainability.
  • D & T: Mechanisms, structures and linked to QCA Controllable vehicles.
  • Maths: Measures
  • PHSE: Teamwork
  • Literacy: Speaking and listening
Organisation:
  • The ideal group size is a class of 30 pupils.
  • This activity will take approximately 2 1/2 hours to complete. Two classes could be  incorporated in the day.
  • A classroom or workspace with tables is required for making and a space for a small water pool to test the boats.
Cost: Full day £375 - Half day £200
